Masking

« Back to Glossary Index

Neurodivergent masking is when autistic or other neurodivergent individuals hide or suppress their natural traits to appear more neurotypical, acting as a survival tactic to fit in, but leading to severe burnout, anxiety, loss of self, and disconnection from authentic relationships due to the immense mental effort required to maintain the facade, often involving stifling stims, faking eye contact, or memorizing social scripts.
